JUST IN: Resident doctors commence 7-day warning strike

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has commenced a 7-day warning strike across all its centers nationwide.

The strike is in protest over the continued captivity of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a member who has been held hostage for over eight months.

NARD President, Dr. Dele Abdullahi, announced in a statement that the strike would begin on Monday, August 26, 2024, at 12 a.m.

Abdullahi explained that the decision to strike was made during an Emergency National Executive Council meeting held virtually on Sunday, August 25, 2024.

He emphasized that the strike will be total and will last for one week, with no emergency care provided during this period.

Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, was abducted nearly eight months ago along with her husband and nephew.

While her husband was released in March, Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity.

Recently, NARD members held protests at tertiary hospitals across the country, demanding the immediate release of Dr. Popoola.
