Rishi Sunak emerges new UK Prime Minister
The Conservative Party of the United Kingdom has elected Rishi Sunak as its new leader.
According to a statement made by Sir Graham Brady, the 1922 Committee only received one nomination for the position of new party leader that was supported by 100 MPs.
Sunak was thus proclaimed by Sir Brady to be the new party leader and, as a result, the new Prime Minister.
Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson dropped out of the contest on Sunday evening after saying it was not the “right time” for him to try and make a comeback as leader.
He then called on his supporters to get behind the former chancellor for the unity of the Conservative Party.
House of Commons leader Penny Mordaunt had been trying to secure the support of the 100 MPs required by the 2pm deadline, but she eventually withdrew, leaving Mr Sunak as the only candidate.
Some MPs who supported Ms Mordaunt in the prime minister’s race said they eventually encouraged her to support Mr Sunak because they felt having a leader by this afternoon was better for the country than a week-long contest.
