The Senate has given its approval to President Bola Tinubu’s request to send Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin to help restore peace and stability after last weekend’s failed coup attempt.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the announcement during Tuesday’s plenary, following lawmakers’ deliberation on the matter in the Committee of the Whole, as required under Section 5, Part II.
The Senators unanimously endorsed the troop deployment, thereby providing legislative support for the regional security mission.
Akpabio described the decision as a step in the right direction, noting that instability in any neighboring state poses a threat to the entire region.
“An injury to one is an injury to all,” the lawmaker said, underscoring Nigeria’s responsibility to support its Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, partner.
Recall that Tinubu had written to the Nigerian Senate requesting consent for the deployment of Nigerian troops to Benin Republic.
