Employees of the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KADECO) have commenced an indefinite strike over alleged plans by the management to terminate over 900 workers and other unresolved grievances.

The protesting workers, under the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), gathered at the corporate headquarters on Monday, carrying placards with various messages.

They blocked the premises, preventing employees and customers from entering.

According to NUEE’s North West Zonal Organising Secretary, Barde, the grievances include the alleged dismissal plan, failure to pay exit benefits to resigned or retired employees for over five years, and nonpayment of five years’ outstanding pensions to retirees.

Other concerns involve the non-implementation of the national minimum wage, lack of promotions for deserving staff, and insufficient provision of essential work tools.

In a related development, a letter dated January 31, 2025, from KADECO’s management directed the affected workers to return company property to the human resources department while assuring them of severance package payments.

The letter, signed by Deputy Managing Director Abubakar Mohammed, stated that their services were no longer required as of the same date.
