On their way from the Stephen Keshi stadium to their dorms, some athletes representing Kaduna State at the ongoing 21st National Sports Festival in Asaba, were attacked.

It was gathered from a Kaduna-based athlete who went on the record under the condition of anonymity that the incident occured on Tuesday morning at 3am in the Itsele-uku neighborhood on their way to the hostel.

The bus that was supposed to take the participants to their dormitories was delayed, therefore it was discovered that the competitors didn’t leave the stadium until after 1am that morning. This exacerbates the issues raised by other athletes over the transportation offered to competitors at the Delta 2022 festival.

The attackers opened fire on the bus carrying the athletes to their lodgings from the stadium, but they missed hitting anyone because they left when they saw that the players were accompanied by security personnel.

The athletes were staying in the Old NYSC camp in Itsele-uku and had complained about how far the dormitories were from the stadium. Some athletes, like the Lagos Taekwondo team, had even made hotel reservations for themselves.
