The Kano State House of Assembly has begun examining the proposed State Police Bill, with lawmakers expected to take it up for second reading on October 12, 2026.
The bill’s receipt and review were confirmed in a Friday statement by Kamaluddeen Shawai, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Jibril Falgore.
Shawai said lawmakers had received copies of the proposed legislation to enable them to scrutinise its provisions and recommend changes where necessary.
The bill has already been introduced during a plenary session, paving the way for further legislative proceedings.
The Assembly’s move comes amid ongoing efforts to amend the Constitution to pave the way for the creation of state police across the country.
Falgore, according to the statement, said Kano was determined to strengthen its security system through proactive legislative action, despite being relatively peaceful compared with several other states.
The State Police Constitution Amendment Bill was forwarded to the 36 state Houses of Assembly on September 16, 2026, for consideration.
