Kano Assembly mandates three agencies to refund N260 million

The Kano State House of Assembly on Tuesday mandated the Kano State Road Traffic Agency, Kano State Primary Health Care Agency, and Kano Printing Press to return N260 million that had been misappropriated by these organizations.

During Tuesday’s plenary session presided over by Speaker Jibril Falgore, the Assembly issued the directive.

The Assembly accused the three agencies of misappropriating their allocations and generated revenue. Lawmakers warned all ministries, agencies, and parastatals to adhere to proper financial management practices or face consequences.

Earlier, Mohammed Tukur, Chairman of the House Committee on Public Account and representative of Fagge Constituency, presented the 2021 audited public account, expressing concern over financial misconduct within government agencies.

Tukur highlighted instances where funds for COVID-19 and social welfare programs were withheld, yet funds allocated for constructing 100 pit toilets with a budget of N200 million were fully utilized.

Tukur also criticized the previous administration’s failure to approve public account audits for six years, resulting in a backlog of unaudited public expenditures.

Subsequently, Majority Leader Lawan Husain proposed a motion to compel the Auditor General and Accountant General of the state to ensure proper accountability and transparency of public funds, as well as the reimbursement of misappropriated funds by MDAs.
