Kano establishes committee on building collapse

A committee has been established by the Kano State Executive Council to look into the immediate and long-term causes of the building collapse at the GSM Market on Beirut Road in the city.

Muhammad Garba, the state’s commissioner for information, made this declaration while briefing reporters on the results of the council meeting that took place at the Executive Council Chambers of the Government House in Kano.

He said that the committee’s mandate was to look into the architectural design of the facility, the cost of the materials used, and whether or not the building codes were followed in its construction.

Garba emphasized that the committee’s other terms of business include examining if the building code has been followed and whether the building has received official clearance.

The commissioner stated that the committee has been tasked with providing the government with any additional recommendations about the regrettable incident.

He stated that the administration has given the committee one week to deliver its findings so that it can be used to take prompt and necessary action.

He stated that the chairman of the Policy, Strategy, Implementation and Evaluation Directorate, Engr. Rabiu Sulaiman Bichi, serves as the committee’s chairman, and that the commissioners for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Idris Wada; Justice, M.A. Lawan; and Environment, Dr. Kabir Ibrahim Getso, also serve on the committee.

Other members include Engr. Mansur Ahmed, Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, and a representative of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN). The secretary of the committee will be a representative from the Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).
