The Katsina State Independent Electoral Commission (KSIEC) has declared the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of 31 out of the 34 LGAs in the April 11 local government councils election.
The results were announced at the commission’s office by the commission’s Secretary, Lawal Alhassan Faskari, who stated that the APC had won all of the chairmanship and councillorship positions in the 31 LGAs.
Faskari added that while results from two LGAs – Daura and Funtua – were awaited, those from Dutsinma, the home LGA of former governor Shema, had been cancelled due to irregularities at the time of the announcement.
“Following the smooth and successful conduct of the local government elections held today Monday April 11, 2022 accross the 34 LGAs of the state, the Katsina State Independent Electoral Commission wishes to inform the general public that the exercise was generally peaceful and keenly contested by 12 registered political parties, except one LGA where the exercise was characterized by many irregularities and election crisis which forced the commission to evoke section 60 of the Katsina State Independent Electoral Commission Law (2002) of Katsina State, to stop the process.
“The Commission has so far received the results of 31 local governments, 321 wards, awaiting that of Funtua and Daura, while election in Dutsinma LGA has been cancelled based on the reason mentioned above.
“The Commission therefore wish to further announce that the APC has won all the 31 chairmanship and 321 councillorship seats so far collated,” the secretary said.
On its part, the opposition PDP said the results announced by the commission were not obtained from the polling units.
Speaking with journalists, a PDP chieftain and governorship candidate in the 2019 election, Senator Yakubu Lado, appealed to the Katsina state government to ensure that it did not plunge the state into crisis.
He said as a law-abiding party, PDP will follow all legal means to reclaim its victory, calling on teeming supporters of the party to remain calm.
He said his party’s “victory” in the election was a testimony to how fed up people are with APC government in the state and the country.
