The Kwara State Fire Service says it retrieved the body of a seven-year-old kid named Abdul-Haayi from a household well in the Akerebiata neighbourhood of Ilorin in the state’s Ilorin East Local Government neighbourhood.

The kid was said to have fallen into the well on Monday evening when his leg slipped, and he perished before his corpse could be rescued by state firemen.

The boy’s body was eventually handed over to Mr Yusuff, who was thought to be a family member of the dead.

According to a statement by the head of Media and Publicity of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, made available to PUNCH Metro on Tuesday, it read, “On Monday, 6th November, 2023, a boy of about seven years old called Abdull-Haayi of Yaa-Lateef House, Tinu Street Akerebiata area Ilorin, Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State, fell into a domestic well and was recovered dead.

“The terrible incident occurred at about 17:28hrs (05:28PM) and the brigade was summoned through an exchange telephone call by one Mr Idowu living in that neighbourhood.

“However, firemen were able to recover the dead body from the well and later handed it over to one Mr Yussuf, a family member of the deceased.

“According to the report, the boy went to fetch water at the well and during the process of fetching, one of his legs suddenly slipped off the ground and eventually tumbled down into the well.”

Adekunle said the Director, Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade Olumuyiwa, expressed his sadness over the incident.

The director appealed to the general public to be more careful in their day-to-day activities and that they should desist from sending underage children to fetch water in domestic well.
