A 35-year-old man, Jimoh Abdulquadri, has reportedly died in police custody, the Kwara State Police Command confirmed.
Abdulquadri, arrested on 19 December 2024 over an alleged debt of ₦220,000 to an individual named Peter, passed away in the early hours of Friday. His family has accused police operatives of brutality while he was in detention.
In response, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, directed the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID) to take over the case immediately.
During a visit to the bereaved family in Ilorin, the IGP expressed his condolences and assured them of an impartial investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding Abdulquadri’s death.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to upholding accountability, professionalism, and respect for human rights,” a statement by Force PRO ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi read.
The IGP called for calm, urging all stakeholders to allow the legal process to take its course.
