Kwara State, in partnership with UNICEF, has distributed relief and hygiene materials to victims of insecurity taking refuge at the Internally Displaced Persons camp in Yikpata, Edu Local Government Area.

The intervention, which included Water, Sanitation and Hygiene materials alongside other relief items, was handed over to camp officials for onward distribution to displaced residents.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued Friday by the Press Secretary of the Kwara State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, Afolabi Temple.

Officials of RUWASSA delivered the materials to the camp and formally presented them to the Camp Commandant, Captain Umar Adamu.

Speaking during the visit, the General Manager of RUWASSA, Olorunfemi Oladipo, represented by the Head of Department, Sanitation and Hygiene, Abdulazeez Rufai, praised the Kwara State Government and UNICEF for supporting vulnerable persons affected by insecurity.

According to him, the intervention reflects the strong collaboration between the state government and UNICEF in addressing the humanitarian needs of displaced residents.

“We sincerely appreciate the Kwara State Government and UNICEF for their swift intervention and commitment to the welfare of displaced persons in Yikpata camp,” he said.

“This support will go a long way in improving hygiene conditions, promoting healthy living and bringing relief to families currently facing difficult circumstances.”

Oladipo assured camp residents of continued government support while efforts to restore peace in affected communities continue.

He also noted that RUWASSA would strengthen hygiene sensitisation and sanitation activities within the camp to prevent disease outbreaks.

“Proper hygiene practices and access to sanitation facilities remain critical in humanitarian situations,” he stated.

“We urge residents of the camp to make proper use of the materials provided for their benefit.”

Receiving the items on behalf of the camp, Captain Umar Adamu commended the Kwara State Government and UNICEF for the timely support, describing the intervention as a reflection of the government’s concern for displaced residents.

“The materials will be distributed fairly and transparently to all beneficiaries within the camp,” Adamu assured.

Also speaking, the representative of the displaced persons, Bello Abubakar, popularly called the camp teacher, thanked the Kwara State Government and UNICEF for supporting affected families.

“This support has brought encouragement to many families in the camp who are going through difficult times,” he said.

The intervention is part of ongoing humanitarian efforts by the Kwara State Government, UNICEF and development partners to improve the welfare of internally displaced persons in affected communities across the state.

The camp currently shelters over 1,000 displaced persons, including about 800 children, 500 women and 165 men.
