Leaders from Organised Labour are currently in a private meeting with President Bola Tinubu to discuss a potential new minimum wage for workers in the country.

Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Festus Osifo, his counterpart at the Trade Union Congress (TUC), were seen arriving at the State House in Abuja on Thursday afternoon for the closed-door session.

The meeting aims to address proposals including the government and private sector’s ₦62,000 offer and Organised Labour’s ₦250,000 demand.

This follows President Tinubu’s announcement during his Democracy Day speech on June 12, 2024, regarding an upcoming executive bill on the national minimum wage for legislative consideration.

On June 25, the Federal Executive Council (FEC), chaired by the President, deferred deliberations on the minimum wage memo to facilitate further consultations with stakeholders.

Subsequently, at the 141st meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC), Tinubu and Vice President Kassim Shettima engaged with governors and ministers from all 36 states to discuss the wage issue.
