The Labour Party (LP) has elected Nenadi Usman as the substantive national chairperson.

Usman was elected on Tuesday at the party’s national convention in Umuahia, the capital of Abia state.

The party also elected other members into the national working committee (NWC), including Iheanacho Obioma (national secretary), Nike Oriola (deputy national chairman), Ken Asogwa (national publicity secretary), Oluchi Oparah (national organising secretary), Anslem Eragbe (national financial secretary), and Hilda Dokubo (national women leader).

Speaking after the convention, Usman expressed gratitude to party members and Alex Otti, Abia governor, for her election, adding that she would promote unity, peace, and reconciliation within the party ahead of the upcoming general election.

Usman, a former minister of finance, was appointed as the party’s national caretaker committee chairperson on September 4 2024.

In January, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially recognised Usman’s leadership, following a federal high court ruling that affirmed the caretaker committee.

On April 21, the court of appeal in Abuja upheld the ruling of the federal high court and dismissed Julius Abure’s appeal seeking to overturn his removal as the party’s national chairman.
