The Labour Party has announced dates for its 2026 internal elections, scheduling its presidential primary for April 28.

According to the timetable, ward congresses will take place on April 23, followed by local government congresses on April 24, and state congresses on April 25.

The schedule was communicated to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in a letter signed by the party’s Interim National Chairman, Sen. Nenadi Usman, and made available to journalists on Friday in Abuja.

Usman explained that the notice was in line with Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended), INEC regulations for political parties, and Sections 223(1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution.

She noted that these provisions require political parties to formally inform INEC of their congresses, conventions, and related activities.

According to her, the party had earlier postponed its planned activities to allow for wider participation and the completion of its ongoing digital membership registration.

She said the Labour Party has now approved a revised timetable covering its ward, LGA, and state congresses, as well as its national convention.

The national convention is scheduled to hold on April 28 at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, Abia State.

Usman urged INEC to notify its state offices to ensure proper monitoring of the exercises in line with its constitutional responsibilities.

She also reaffirmed the party’s commitment to strengthening democracy in Nigeria.
