Lagos charges civil servants on self-development

Lagos State Government on Wednesday charged civil servants in the state to develop themselves in order to be indispensable.

Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Ajibola Ponnle, gave this charge at the end of project close-out session agenda on Competency framework development project for Lagos State Public Servants held in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.

She urged the workers to ensure they give their best to Lagosians, adding that the project is for all civil servants.

According to Ponnle, now that the project is available, civil servants did not need to wait for the government to send them on training, especially now that training is available everywhere.

The commissioner said the government launched Project Talent, to aid civil servants deliver Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES agenda in a Lagos Mega Smart City.

“The idea of the project is to identify the behaviour and attitude required of every single service cadre, so that we know exactly and have a global holistic view of what is needed and required at any point in time by each civil servant.

“This is a very great opportunity for all civil servants to equip themselves knowledge-wise, especially with the availability of this competency framework development project. This project is for all civil servants, now that we have it, they don’t need to wait for Lagos State Government to send them on training.

“Training is now available everywhere. The Learning Management System (LMS) is available for them. You can have it everywhere, even on your phone. Carry it anywhere, once you get one, take your training in your own hand and start running it, you don’t need to wait for anybody to call you,” Ponnle said.

She stated that the project was a very involving one, in which the state was able to develop over 3,000 competencies, majorly on technical, generic and behavioural, adding that it encompassed every cadres.

Ponnle said the project looked at the in-depth of the civil servants from the point of entry, his role within and his competence to the point of exit.

“The project is a very involving project, which without doubt had been used to develop over 3,000 competencies, among which are technical, generic and behavioural competencies. We worked with 10 MDAs and we are so proud of the outcome six months down the lane. It’s very impressive,” she said.

Ponnle added that the next step the government is taking was to use the framework to identify the next move that every single civil servant needed to take from one grade to the next grade level, develop the gaps and development needed and “as well the training needed can be found locally, online or internationally.”

Some of the beneficiaries of the 6-month competency programme expressed their appreciation to the organiser of the event and said they were all equipped knowledge-wise.
