Lagos govt shuts Alade market over environmental violations

The Lagos State Government, in the early hours of Wednesday, shut down the popular Alade Market in Onigbongbo Local Council Area of Ikeja, citing repeated violations of environmental regulations.

The closure of Alade Market was ordered by the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab.

Director, of Public Affairs, ministry, Kunle Adeshina, made this known through his official X handle, (formerly Twitter).

According to Adeshina, the enforcement was conducted by the personnel of the Lagos State Waste Management Agency (LAWMA) in partnership with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), also known as Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI).

According to him ”As directed by Honorable Commissioner for The Environment and Water Resources, MOE&WR, Tokunbo Wahab, enforcement operatives from LAWMA and KAI/ LAGESC in a joint operation on Wednesday morning sealed Alade Market situated in Onigbongbo LCDA.”

Adesina stated that the market will remain closed until specific requirements are fulfilled.

It’s important to remember that the government, through the ministry, has taken the step to close numerous well-known markets in the state due to environmental violations.

Some of the markets affected by these closures include Oyingbo, Alayabiagba, Mile-12, Alaba International, ASPAMDA, Ladipo, Oke-Odo, and others.
