Lagos State Government has called for efforts to achieve a zero fire incident at markets, with the inauguration of safety and emergency marshals.

The government, through Lagos State Safety Commission (LSSC), said it had become important to have market representatives that would ensure emergency preparedness at markets, to prevent fire disaster.

Speaking at a training at Obanikoro Market, Lagos Island, the Director, LSSC, Mr Lanre Mojola, said the workshop was designed to inform participants about the hazards identification, prevention, recovery and response around markets.

He said past fire disasters had affected the state financially in terms of compensation to the victims and also caused insurance costs to traders that had made the agency to recalibrate its programme by sensitising the people and training them on how to identify hazards.

Safety is a collective responsibility and what we have decided to do is take samples of traders and train them in principles of safety.

Today we have brought together 50 people that are being trained in market safety. They will be the first set of market safety fire wardens in this market,’’ Mojola added.

Technical Adviser, LSSC, Mr. Seun Awojobi, said markets were vital to the economic development of the state, noting that they remained the hub of commerce and must be protected from hazards such as fire, incidents and others.
