Lagos raises BRT fares by 18% from next week

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced an 18% increase in fares for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, set to take effect next week.

A notice posted by LAMATA on Thursday stated that the fare hike was due to rising operational costs and the need to keep buses running efficiently across Lagos.

“We seek passengers’ understanding and cooperation as this increase is necessary to sustain services,” the notice read.

The Lagos State Government had previously withdrawn a 50% discount on public transport in November 2023, returning fares to pre-August 2023 levels.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had initially reduced transport fares by 25% in July 2023 as part of measures to cushion the impact of fuel subsidy removal by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Additionally, the state government has expanded its fleet of staff buses for public service workers, with deployment managed by the Office of the Head of Service.
