According to the 2023 Global Traffic Congestion Rankings by Traffic Index, Lagos State tops the list for the worst road traffic among all cities globally with a population of at least 500,000 inhabitants.
Riga, the largest city and capital of Latvia, secured the second position on the list, with Tehran, the capital and largest city of Iran, following in third place. Mexico City in Mexico, Mumbai in India, and Krakow in Poland were ranked fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively.
Within Africa, Cairo in Egypt claimed the 9th position, with Casablanca, the economic and business center of Morocco, ranking 48th, making them the only African cities on the list.’
In developing countries, traffic congestion is prevalent due to poor road conditions and a lack of connectivity, among other factors.
