Lagos reopens Alaba Rago market after meeting environmental standards

The Lagos State Government has reopened Alaba Rago Market in Ojo, after it was shut down last week due to several environmental violations.

The market was reinstated after fulfilling specified sanitation compliance requirements, as stated by Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, in a statement released on Monday.

Wahab noted that the Lagos State Government had reopened Alaba Rago Market after temporarily closing it due to severe environmental violations and negligence.

The commissioner urged other markets to prioritize cleanliness and contribute to making the state more habitable for everyone.

He also reaffirmed the government’s dedication to enforcing environmental standards throughout the state, emphasizing that the reopening of Alaba Rago Market should serve as a strong reminder to all market stakeholders to place significant importance on maintaining cleanliness and sanitation.

The Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Muyiwa Gbadegesin, emphasized the significance of cooperation among market authorities, traders, and pertinent government agencies in upholding a clean and healthful market environment.

Gbadegesin clarified that the reopening of the market should not be interpreted as a relaxation of the stance on environmental violations, as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration maintains its unwavering commitment to a zero-tolerance policy. He further stressed that markets play a pivotal role in advancing environmental sustainability throughout the state.
