The Lagos State Government has shut down more than 20 properties in Ikeja over violations of physical planning regulations.
The enforcement exercise, carried out by the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA), targeted buildings and developments found to be operating outside the provisions of the state’s planning laws.
The operation was led by the Permanent Secretary, Office of Physical Planning, Olayinka Wasiu, alongside the agency’s General Manager, Kehinde Osinaike, and other top officials, according to a government statement issued on Saturday.
Among the affected properties were undeveloped plots, unfinished buildings and structures that had been altered without the required approval.
Explaining the exercise, Wasiu said it was intended to stop unsafe developments before they pose risks to the public.
“The enforcement action was a proactive measure aimed at preventing building collapse, promoting orderly physical development and ensuring strict compliance with the Lagos State Physical Planning Law,” the statement read.
He added that the state would continue to enforce planning regulations to protect residents and ensure safer communities.
“The state government remains committed to safeguarding lives and property by enforcing planning regulations that guarantee a safe, resilient and sustainable built environment across Lagos State,” the statement added.
The permanent secretary noted that the affected property owners had been given enough time to comply after receiving official notices highlighting the violations.
“Contravention notices had been served on the affected property owners, clearly outlining the necessary steps required to regularise their developments before the enforcement exercise became inevitable,” the statement said.
He urged developers to secure all required planning permits before beginning construction or modifying existing buildings.
“Compliance with planning regulations is essential to achieving sustainable urban development,” the statement noted.
Wasiu said the ministry would continue to identify and sanction illegal developments across Lagos.
“The Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, through LASPPPA, will continue to intensify monitoring and enforcement activities across the State to curb illegal developments and preserve the integrity of the built environment,” the statement read.
He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to maintaining a properly planned and legally compliant city.
“The Authority remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring an orderly, aesthetically pleasing and legally compliant physical environment that supports the Lagos State Government’s vision of a safe, modern and sustainable megacity,” the statement added.
