The Lagos State Government has announced that construction of the $3 billion Green Line rail project, designed to connect Marina to the Lekki corridor, will begin in December 2025.

The disclosure was made by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, in a statement released through the state government’s official X account on Monday.

Osiyemi noted that the government has completed detailed feasibility studies and conducted several stakeholder consultations along the Lekki-Epe corridor ahead of the project’s kickoff.

The Green Line rail, projected to be completed within two to three years, will be executed in phases. The first phase will span from the Lekki First Tollgate to Epe, while the second phase, beginning from Marina, will include an innovative on-water segment.

“The government has conducted extensive consultations and feasibility assessments along the Lekki-Epe Expressway corridor ahead of the Green Line’s commencement in December,” the statement quoted Osiyemi as saying. “The project, expected to last two to three years, will connect Marina to Epe, with construction to proceed in phases, the initial phase covering Lekki First Tollgate to Epe and the second, from Marina, to be developed over water.”

The announcement comes as the state intensifies enforcement operations along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, clearing encroachments and reclaiming wetlands critical to preserving the Green Line’s designated right-of-way.
