Lagos Metropolitan Transport Authority (LAMATA) is finalizing arrangements to raise the number of journeys on the 13-kilometer Blue Line rail corridor from 54 to 76 by year-end.
Abimbola Akinajo, the Managing Director of the agency, revealed this information during a briefing in Lagos held to mark the agency’s two decades of operations.
Akinajo also provided timelines for completing the second phase of the Blue Line Rail project, which spans from Mile 2 to Okoko and has already begun construction; it is expected to be finished by 2027.
Anticipating the completion of infrastructure work by December, the agency aims to initiate commercial operations on the Red Line corridor in the second quarter of 2024. The Red Line, spanning 37 kilometers from Agbado to Marina, is planned to include 13 stations at Agbado, Iju, Agege, Ikeja, MMIA International, MMIA Domestic, Oshodi, Mushin, Yaba, Ebute Meta, Iddo, Ebute Ero, and Marina.
In the realm of road transportation, LAMATA has announced plans to deploy no less than 1,000 electric buses (EBs) on roads within the next 24 months. This initiative is geared towards exploring alternative fuels for urban mobility and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
