Lagos unveils smart identity card for residents

Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) has launched the upgraded Lagos State Resident Identity Card (LAG smart ID Card) in its bid to provide a reliable data base in the state.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at the unveiling on Tuesday, said the event was held simultaneously across the state’s five divisions, namely Ikorodu, Ikeja, Epe, Badagry and Lagos Island. The Ikeja unveiling was held at the Police College Ground in GRA, Ikeja.

The governor said the state was targeting to produce 10 million cards before the end of the year.

He thanked Lagosians for their commitment to achieving the Greater Lagos agenda.

Special Adviser to the governor on Innovation and Technology Tunbosun Alake said the launch was a landmark event to catalyse the state economy through technology, as the state required a robust identification system that was highly secured to ensure cyber security among other features.

LASRRA General Manager Ibilola Kasunmu said the new card, the first of its kind in Africa, was embedded with more features and functionalities to offer the holders wider and faster access to services provided by the government. She said LASRRA would partner stakeholders to enhance the lives of Lagosians.

Kasunmu said holders could also use it as a payment card for services across multiple vendors, including buses, ferries, supermarkets and cash withdrawals from Automated Teller Machines (ATMs).

She appealed to residents to register on the agency’s website www.lagosresidents.gov.ng.
