The National Coordinator of the National Counter-Terrorism Centre, Major General Adamu Laka, has reassured Nigerians that the newly identified terror group, Lakurawa, poses no significant threat, as its membership is reportedly fewer than 200 individuals.

Speaking in Abuja about the recent surge in terrorism in Sokoto State and other parts of the North-West linked to Lakurawa, General Laka emphasized that the military and other security agencies, under the coordination of National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, are fully in control of the situation and are working to eliminate the group in the near future.

He noted that since the group’s emergence, the Minister of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff, and other service chiefs have held multiple high-level meetings. These discussions have led to decisive actions aimed at eradicating Lakurawa and any other similar threats in Sokoto State and across Nigeria.

Speaking on how the group berthed in the North-West, Gen Laka explained that, “The people invited them to come and provide security against bandits. Now after providing the security for some time, they are imposing and collecting taxes from the people which cannot happen and which will not be allowed in a sovereign country.”

The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, has issued a stern warning to the Lakurawa terrorist group, stating that their days are numbered if they do not cease their acts of terrorism.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Comptroller General of Customs Conference in Abuja on Wednesday, Ribadu emphasized that no one challenges President Bola Tinubu’s administration without facing consequences.

He declared that the group has chosen the wrong time to operate under Tinubu’s leadership and assured that decisive actions would be taken to expel them from Nigeria.
