A landslide triggered by torrential rain in Equatorial Guinea has killed a mother and her six children, according to rescue services.

The tragedy occurred in Malabo on Thursday after heavy rainfall caused a retaining wall to collapse onto the family’s wooden home, followed by a landslide.

Rescue workers recovered two bodies early on Friday, including that of the 36-year-old mother, who was eight months pregnant, according to witnesses at the scene.

“It was a concrete retaining wall that collapsed onto their wooden house, followed by a landslide,” said neighbour Dominica Ada.

“The mother and her six children were all inside,” she added.

Government officials and the Archbishop of Malabo have since visited the site to offer condolences and support ongoing rescue efforts.
