The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency attended to a number of emergencies across Lagos between Friday and Sunday, including multiple truck incidents, a road crash and a fire outbreak.
The agency, in a statement issued by its Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said its response teams were deployed to different locations to manage the incidents and restore normal activities.
One of the incidents occurred around 8:41am on Friday at Palm Avenue Bus Stop, inward Oye, after a container truck carrying a 40ft container broke down and disrupted traffic.
LASEMA said its Eagle Team arrived at the location, controlled the movement of vehicles and diverted motorists while waiting for heavy-duty recovery equipment.
“The Eagle Team professionally managed traffic and diverted oncoming vehicles to prevent secondary incidents while awaiting the Agency’s heavy-duty equipment,” the statement said.
The agency subsequently used its Super Metro to tow the truck away from the road and park it at a nearby lay-by, allowing traffic to flow normally.
At Ojuwoye Bus Stop, inward Oshodi, another container truck developed an electrical fault later that evening. The Alpha Eagle Team responded after receiving a distress call at about 7:24pm and secured the area while the vehicle was being recovered.
“With the aid of the Super Metro, the truck was recovered and moved to a safe location, ensuring unhindered vehicular movement along the corridor,” the statement said.
On Saturday morning, emergency officials also responded to a collision at Otedola, Mobil inward Berger.
The accident involved a Ford Escape SUV and a moving truck. LASEMA’s Tiger Squad from C3 arrived at approximately 6:07am and found that the SUV had crashed into the rear of the truck.
The SUV’s male driver and female passenger sustained injuries and were attended to by emergency medical personnel.
“The Agency’s Paramedics, in collaboration with LASAMBUS, promptly administered first aid and provided immediate pre-hospital care before transporting the casualties to the Trauma Centre for further medical treatment,” the statement said.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASTMA and the Nigeria Police Force were also involved in the response, while the vehicles were later taken to Isheri Police Station.
LASEMA further reported the recovery of another container truck that broke down at Olorunshogo Bus Stop, inward Cappa, on Friday evening.
“The vehicle was recovered with the aid of the Super Metro and relocated to a layby,” the statement said.
In another incident, a truck carrying interlocking materials became stranded at Ojuwoye early Sunday and was later removed from the road by the agency.
Meanwhile, a fire was reported at Bakare Street, Ojodu Berger, where three of eight shops selling foodstuffs and frozen products were affected.
According to LASEMA, the fire was linked to an electrical surge after electricity supply was restored.
“The swift and professional intervention of the Tiger Squad and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service successfully contained the inferno, prevented it from spreading to other shops, and completely extinguished the fire,” the statement said.
No casualty was recorded.
Another major operation took place at Shoprite, inward Governor’s Road, on Sunday after a loaded 40ft container detached from a Sinotruk head and overturned with its flatbed, blocking part of the road.
“The response team immediately secured the scene and implemented traffic management measures,” the statement said.
LASEMA said a coordinated recovery operation was carried out with its Lowbed, a private towing vehicle, an empty Sinotruk and a private forklift.
“The Peak Milk products contained therein were successfully transloaded, the affected truck head was towed to the LASTMA yard and the flatbed was uprighted and recovered to a nearby layby,” it said.
The road was subsequently cleared and reopened to motorists.
Beyond emergency incidents, LASEMA also assisted with the installation of a billboard at Fagba Bus Stop, inward Iju, on Saturday evening, using its Hiab equipment.
Oke-Osanyintolu said the various operations had been completed and that the affected roads had been restored.
“All operations have been concluded, affected roadways have been restored and response teams have returned to base in good condition,” he said.
He assured residents that the agency would continue to respond to emergencies across the state.
“The Agency reassures Lagosians of its continued readiness for prompt and professional emergency response at all times,” he said.
He also advised motorists to observe safety rules, ensure their vehicles are properly maintained and exercise caution on the roads.
