LASUSTECH student falls off hostel balcony, dies

A student of Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu, has been confirmed dead after falling from the balcony of an off-campus hostel. 

Lanre Kuye, the varsity spokesperson who confirmed the incident to on Tuesday saying the victim died over the weekend.

The school PRO said it is correct that the young boy died at an off-campus apartment he rented.

“It did not happen in our hostel. We do not have hostel. It happened off-campus,” he said.

“Students rent houses outside the university. It is true that it happened.”

The incident was said to have occurred last weekend at Lasunwon First Gate, an area in Ikorodu.

The student, identified as Emmanuel Nweke, was said to have stepped out of the building’s first floor to receive fresh air.

The 100-level mathematics student leaned on the house railings but lost his balance, and fell to the ground.

He however lost his life before his colleagues could rush him to the hospital.

The building was reportedly locked down while the landlord was arrested by the Ikorodu divisional police.

Abdul-Raheem Abdul-Quadri, the chairman of NANS in Lagos, called on the school management to provide hostels for students to prevent such occurence in the future.

The union demanded a thorough investigation into the death of Nweke.

It also asked the Lagos government to sanction off-campus house owners violating building regulations.
