Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has asked Nigerian leaders at all levels of government to set a good example by sacrificing for a better Nigeria.
He was responding to a viral video purportedly showing President Bola Tinubu with a convoy of roughly 120 cars in Lagos on his way back from London on Tuesday.
Obi, who claimed that a group of journalists approached him at an event in Anambra State on Thursday and asked him to comment on the video, said that the size and duration of an official motorcade cannot evaluate the quality of leadership.
According to him, the present Nigeria requires that those who serve must serve prudently, and with a sense of selfless sacrifice.
He said the behaviour of the leaders, their character, and attitude must reflect the solutions to the challenges facing Nigerians “because our people are suffering in this country, and we must have that at the back of our minds.”
While urging the people to bear the present hardship for a better tomorrow patiently, the former Anambra State governor called on the leaders to live more frugally and act more responsibly for a better society.
“We must begin to drastically cut the cost of governance, and invest in different aspects of human development that will improve the lives of our people,” Obi added.
On his return to Lagos from London on Tuesday, Tinubu was received at the airport by supporters and high-ranking members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) including Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Senators and Representatives from Lagos State.
The President’s convoy then made its way from Ikeja to his private residence in Bourdillon, Ikoyi.
