South African actress and singer Winnie Khumalo has passed away at the age of 51 following a brief illness, her family has confirmed.
The renowned Afropop artist, whose musical career began in the 1980s, also appeared in several popular South African TV series.
Khumalo is best remembered for her hit song Live My Life and her collaborations with notable South African musicians, including the late Brenda Fassie.
Her sister, Tshepi Akeepile, revealed that the singer passed away on Tuesday while en route to the hospital.
“My sister was sick. She did have a short illness and we really thought she was recovering. But this morning it turned out she hadn’t fully recovered from her illness. She was quickly rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead,” Ms Rakeepile told SABC TV.
Details surrounding her illness remain unclear.

Kalawa Jazmee Records, the label she collaborated with, honored her as a “true icon” whose powerful voice and “unforgettable performances” inspired countless people.
“Her passion, talent, and dedication to her craft have left an indelible mark on the industry and in the hearts of her fans,” the label said in a statement.
