Maanum strike helps Arsenal win at Leicester

Frida Maanum’s second-half goal secured Arsenal’s first victory of the Women’s Super League season with a 1-0 win over Leicester City.

Maanum scored from close range after Alessia Russo capitalized on a poor backpass from Catherine Bott and delivered a cross into the box.

Arsenal dominated possession in the first half but couldn’t find the back of the net until 10 minutes into the second half.

While the breakthrough took time, Arsenal created several early chances. Beth Mead’s cross to the far post found Russo, but her low shot skimmed the side-netting.

Russo also set up Lia Walti in the box, but her strike towards the top corner was superbly tipped over by goalkeeper Lize Kop.

Leicester’s best chance of the first half came when Ruby Mace’s diagonal ball found Jutta Rantala, who cut inside and smashed a shot off the crossbar.

Arsenal finally broke the deadlock with Maanum’s goal, settling the side after their 2-2 draw with Manchester City on the opening weekend.

Leicester pushed for an equalizer late on but couldn’t convert their chances. Yuka Momiki’s long-range effort narrowly missed the post, and Janice Cayman’s shot was saved by Arsenal goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar, who was making her debut.

Substitute Shana Chossenotte also had a clear chance, but Van Domselaar made a crucial save with her legs to deny the French winger.

Leicester’s struggles against Arsenal continued, with this result marking their seventh consecutive WSL loss to Jonas Eidevall’s team by an aggregate score of 24-2.

The win came just a day after Arsenal’s men needed two stoppage-time goals to defeat Leicester in the Premier League at Emirates Stadium.
