Madagascar MPs vote to impeach president

On Tuesday, Madagascar’s lower house of parliament voted to impeach President Andry Rajoelina for dereliction of duty. The presidency dismissed the session as “devoid of any legal basis.”

The resolution passed with 130 votes in favour, well above the two-thirds majority required in the 163-member chamber. The move represents a strong rebuke of the president, who has gone into hiding following weeks of street protests over the nation’s governance.
