Mahamat Deby Itno, Chad’s military chief, has been declared the victor of the country’s presidential election, according to provisional results announced Thursday.
The Chadian National Election Management Agency said on Thursday that Déby won the May 6 election with more than 61% of the vote, defeating Succès Masra, the current prime minister and primary opponent, who was reported to have received 18.5 percent.
The result allows Déby, the incumbent, to retain the presidency and eliminates the possibility of a runoff, which would have occurred if no candidate obtained more than half of the vote.
Déby’s victory also confirms his family’s 34-year dynasty.
