Man arrested for raping mentally disturbed Ogun housewife

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a man, Tahiru Hamidu, for allegedly engaging in unlawful sexual intercourse with a mentally unstable married woman (name withheld) in Owode, a community in the Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of the state.

The spokesperson for the state police, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the arrest on Tuesday.

According to reports, the suspect allegedly took advantage of the survivor’s condition, engaging in non-consensual sexual acts multiple times before he was apprehended by officers from the Owode Egba Division on September 12, 2024.

Hamidu has also been accused of threatening to kill the survivor’s brother-in-law, Shofolahan, if he did not stop the assault on his brother’s wife.

In one instance, Hamidu, who hails from Northern Nigeria, reportedly lured the survivor to a cassava plantation, where he allegedly raped her multiple times before letting her go.

Odutola stated, “The survivor is mentally incapacitated. Her brother-in-law, who reported the case, claims the suspect threatened to kill him if he tried to stop the assaults. The suspect is accused of repeatedly engaging in sexual acts with the survivor.”

She added that Hamidu allegedly lured the survivor to the plantation in the community, where he continued the non-consensual sexual intercourse.

“The suspect warned the brother-in-law to stop interfering and even demanded that he hand over the survivor to him,” Odutola added.

An investigation is ongoing following the suspect’s arrest.

In a related incident reported in March 2024,  a 26-year-old man, Usman Bube, was arrested for allegedly attempting to rape his pregnant neighbor’s wife at Ogatalo Fulani Camp in the Imala area of the state. Bube reportedly broke into the apartment while the woman’s husband was away, but neighbors intervened before he could succeed in his attack.
