A 45-year-old man, identified only as Kazeem, has drowned in a river at Odo Tente, a boundary community between Lagos and Ogun states.
The incident occurred on Friday around 11 a.m.
Before the tragic event, Kazeem was said to have consumed a hard drug suspected to be Colorado. Under the influence of the drug, he reportedly lost control, ran erratically, and jumped into the river.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Sunday, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin said, “On 11/10/2024 at about 11 a.m., a complainant reported at the Alagbado Division that one Kazeem, ‘M’, aged 45, under the influence of a hard drug suspected to be Colorado, ran uncontrollably and jumped into a river at the Odo Tente boundary between Lagos and Ogun states. Sequel to this, the victim drowned and died.”
Hundeyin added that detectives from the Alagbado Division visited the scene and took photographs of the deceased. The victim’s father, when contacted, requested that the body be buried immediately by the riverside in accordance with their local tradition.
The police have launched an investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, the Federal Ministry of Youth Development recently pledged to partner with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to raise awareness, provide rehabilitation, and offer skills training to Nigerian youths affected by substance abuse. This commitment was reaffirmed by the Minister of Youth Development, Jamila Bio Ibrahim, during a visit to NDLEA Chairman/CEO Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (retd.) in Abuja.
