A family dispute in Lagos turned deadly on Monday when one man fatally stabbed his cousin during a physical altercation.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stating that the suspect is currently at large.
According to the police, a woman reported that her son, Ganiyu Ibrahim, and her nephew, Afeez Akeem, had a disagreement that escalated into a violent confrontation. The incident occurred around 7 a.m. when Ganiyu and Afeez got into a heated argument, which soon turned physical.
“During the altercation, Ganiyu broke a bottle and stabbed Afeez in the chest. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead by the attending doctor. A team of detectives responded immediately, and evidence, including photographs, was collected from the scene,” said Hundeyin.
Hundeyin also noted that the family declined an autopsy, opting to bury Akeem in accordance with Islamic rites. He added, “The suspect is still at large, and an investigation is ongoing to apprehend him.”
In a separate incident earlier in October, the police detained 25-year-old Chibunma Chimelie, who allegedly stabbed his 68-year-old father to death. That incident took place in the Isolo area of Lagos around 10:00 p.m., and was reported to the Aswani Police Divisional Station by the suspect’s brother.
