Bitrus Wurawa has been placed on remand by the Ikeja branch of the Lagos State High Court after being accused of fatally stabbing Ezekiel Yohana at Kara Market in the Ibeju-Lekki district of the state with a jackknife.
On April 10, the defendant was charged with one count of murder and appeared before Magistrate P. E. Nwaka.
Yahana, 23, allegedly borrowed N14,000 from Wurawa in January with the promise of paying it back within a few weeks.
Nevertheless, despite many requests from the defendant, Yahana was unable to do so.
Yahana was alleged to have pulled out a jackknife during a dispute, which the defendant promptly grabbed from him and used to stab Yahana’s hand and back.
The charge read, “That you, Bitrus Wurawa, on March 18, 2023, around 6.23 pm at Kara Market, Ibeju Lekki, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District did unlawfully killed one Ezekiel Yohana, 23, by stabbing him with a jackknife.”
On March 8, Thomas Nurudeen Wurawa, the prosecutor, committed the crime.
Nurudeen stated that the offence is penalised in accordance with Section 233 of Lagos State’s 2015 Criminal Code.
He pleaded with the court to send Wurawa to the detention facility until the Directorate of Public Prosecution could provide legal counsel.
In anticipation of the DPP’s legal counsel, the defendant has been remanded to the Ikoyi Correctional Center.
The case was postponed to May 5, 2023 by Magistrate Nwaka.
