Man Utd winger, Jadon Sancho returns to Borussia Dortmund on loan
Manchester United and England winger Jadon Sancho has returned to his former club Borussia Dortmund on a loan deal for the remainder of the 2023-24 season.
The 23-year-old, who transferred to Old Trafford in a £73m deal from the German club Dortmund in July 2021, has not featured for United since August 26.
Following a disagreement with manager Erik ten Hag, he has been training separately from the first team since September.
The loan agreement does not include an option to purchase.
“When I came into the dressing room today, it felt like ‘coming home’,” Sancho said.
“I know the club inside and out, I’ve always been very close with the fans here, and I’ve never lost contact with those in charge.
“I can’t wait to see my team-mates again, go out on the pitch, play football with a smile on my face, prepare goals, score goals and help qualify for the Champions League.”
Having undergone a medical on Wednesday, Sancho is already in Germany and is set to join Borussia Dortmund’s mid-season training camp in Marbella.
Dortmund will pay 3.5 million euros (£3 million), with the potential for an additional 4 million euros (£3.4 million) in add-ons based on appearances, Champions League progress, and qualification.
The agreement covers the majority of Sancho’s wages, and with full bonuses, it could surpass 100% of his salary until the end of the season.
Sancho, who spent four seasons with the Bundesliga club from 2017, scoring 50 goals in 137 appearances, has faced challenges in form and consistency since his high-profile move to Old Trafford. He scored 12 goals in 82 appearances.
His relationship with Ten Hag soured after being excluded from the squad for September’s defeat at Arsenal, with the Dutchman citing his performance in training as the reason.
Sancho rejected those claims and said on social media that he was being made a “scapegoat” and later refused to apologise for his comments, which led to his exile.
“Jadon is an absolute difference player and I’m looking forward to seeing him back in black and yellow soon,” added Dortmund’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl.
Sitting in fifth place in the Bundesliga, Dortmund will recommence their campaign against Darmstadt on January 13 after a short winter training stint in Marbella, Spain.
