A minibus driver and his passenger have been hospitalised with serious injuries following a collision on the Lekki-Ajah Expressway on Thursday.

According to a statement by Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the accident took place near Ikota School when a Ford Jeep crashed into the commercial minibus.

The impact was so severe that the minibus driver reportedly fell into a coma, suffering a fractured right arm. A passenger aboard the vehicle also sustained critical injuries, including heavy nasal bleeding and unconsciousness.

Taofiq said, “The crash involved a white Ford Jeep with registration number KWL 574 CY and a fully loaded commercial minibus with number plate FST 207 YK.

“Preliminary investigations suggest the Jeep driver was travelling at excessive speed, lost control, and violently struck the moving minibus, causing extensive damage.”

LASTMA officers at the scene swiftly transported the victims to a nearby hospital with assistance from the police. The accident site was also secured to prevent further disruption.

In response to the incident, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki warned motorists against speeding, describing it as a major cause of fatal accidents.

He stated, “Excessive speed continues to be a leading cause of road crashes. Drivers must prioritise safety over haste.”

Bakare-Oki wished the injured a swift recovery and reiterated LASTMA’s commitment to proactive traffic control and public safety education.

Two fatal accidents on April 19 in Ogun State, where four individuals lost their lives along the Oru/Ijebu-Igbo Road and Sagamu-Ikorodu Expressway.

One of the incidents reportedly involved a Dangote truck driving against traffic and colliding with another truck carrying cow skins. Another crash occurred when a speeding motorcycle lost control and somersaulted, resulting in one fatality.
