A mob has burnt a woman to death in Kasuwan-Garba, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State, after accusing her of making blasphemous remarks.

The victim, a restaurant owner identified as Amaye, was said to have made comments considered offensive while speaking with a customer who jokingly proposed marriage to her, citing the tradition of the Prophet. Her response reportedly provoked outrage in the community.

She was initially taken to the District Head’s palace, who handed her over to security operatives for investigation. However, the mob overpowered the officers and lynched her.

Confirming the incident, the Niger State Police Command said it occurred on 30 August 2025 at about 2:00 p.m. Police spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, said the mob set the woman ablaze before reinforcements could arrive.

Abiodun condemned the act of jungle justice, stressing that investigations had begun to identify, arrest, and prosecute those responsible. He urged residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.

The killing has raised concerns among residents and human rights advocates, who warned against the growing trend of mob violence in parts of the country, calling for stronger preventive measures to uphold law and order.
