The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has confirmed that a mother and her son narrowly escaped death after a Lexus sport utility vehicle overturned several times at the NYSC Bus Stop along the LASU–Isheri Expressway in Lagos.
In a statement released on Wednesday and signed by the Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, the agency characterised the early morning incident as a single-vehicle but grave road accident.
According to the statement, the Lexus Jeep bearing registration number KJA 39 JT was travelling from Isheri towards Igando when it suddenly lost control and “overturned thrice before finally coming to rest” amid dense rush-hour traffic on the busy route.
LASTMA disclosed that its personnel stationed within the area responded promptly to the emergency.
The agency stated that officers “rapidly mobilised to the location and executed a coordinated rescue intervention,” successfully freeing the occupants from the badly damaged vehicle.
The mother and her son were rescued with “visible bruises and mild physiological trauma,” narrowly escaping what the authority described as a potentially fatal disaster.
Officers of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the Igando Division reportedly supported the rescue effort, managing the crowd and securing the scene throughout the evacuation.
The statement further noted that relatives of the victims arrived shortly after being informed and transported them for additional medical assessment and treatment.
To avert secondary collisions and alleviate traffic congestion along the Lagos State University corridor, LASTMA said its officials oversaw the removal of the wrecked vehicle with assistance from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency. The vehicle was later handed over to the police for investigation and other necessary administrative procedures.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed gratitude that no fatalities were recorded. He wished the mother and her son a speedy recovery and reiterated the agency’s dedication to swift emergency response and proactive traffic regulation.
Bakare-Oki also advised motorists to comply strictly with established speed limits and to carry out routine mechanical inspections before setting out on journeys. He warned that excessive speed, particularly when coupled with mechanical defects such as faulty braking systems, “constitutes a dangerous precursor to severe roadway tragedies on major expressways.”
