Motorcyclists protest over colleagues’ death by task force in Delta

Major roads and markets in Asaba and Okayama in the Oshimili South and Oshimili North Local Government Areas of Delta State were, on Monday, taken over by aggrieved motorcycle riders protesting the death of their colleagues.

According to eyewitnesses, a group of motorcycle riders vented their anger by taking to the streets, resulting in property destruction.

The protesters also targeted businesses near the well-known Midwifery market in Okpanam and the Delta State Post Primary Education Board along Sunnis Road in Asaba.

Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, reported that two motorcycle riders lost their lives on Sunday during an enforcement operation by the State Task Force.

Edafe further mentioned that additional police officers have been dispatched to suppress the protest.

“There was a violent protest this morning by Okada riders who had issue last night with the state task force that led to the death of two persons.

“They mobilised in the their numbers this morning destroying properties and beating people, hence our men were deployed to control the situation before it turns to something else,” Edafe wrote in a post on his X handle.
