MultiChoice to discontinue Showmax streaming service

MultiChoice Group has announced plans to discontinue Showmax, its streaming platform, following a “comprehensive review” of its digital strategy.

The decision comes five months after Canal+ Group took over MultiChoice, the South African pay-TV operator. The company said the move aims to strengthen its overall digital offering and ensure “long-term sustainability in an increasingly competitive streaming environment.”

For now, Showmax will continue to operate, and subscribers will experience no immediate disruption. MultiChoice assured customers that no action is required at this time and promised to communicate the shutdown timeline and transition plans ahead of any changes.

The company emphasised that streaming remains central to its strategy, with continued investment in premium content, technology, and partnerships to deliver quality entertainment.

Launched in August 2015 in South Africa, Showmax was created to compete with global streaming services, offering movies, series, and documentaries online rather than via scheduled television.
