The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down a warehouse in Kaduna for storing expired food and cosmetic products valued at over ₦75 million.
This action followed a tip-off from a concerned citizen, according to a statement shared on NAFDAC’s official X handle on Tuesday. The warehouse, located at PP2A Bayajidda Street by Kano Road, New Ogbomosho Road, was raided by the agency.
During the operation, workers were caught repackaging expired biscuits into sacks. Other expired items, including dairy milk, vegetable oil, soft drinks, and detergents, were also uncovered.
NAFDAC reported that the managing director of the warehouse has been arrested for further interrogation, with regulatory sanctions expected upon the conclusion of the investigation.
Among the expired products, items valued at over ₦7 million, such as “H-Pylori” test kits, were identified as posing severe health risks.
The agency reiterated its guidelines for handling and disposing of unwholesome medicines and regulated products, which have been in effect since November 26, 2024. It emphasized that no regulated product can be manufactured, imported, exported, sold, or used in Nigeria without NAFDAC registration.
“Products are considered unwholesome if they are expired, improperly sealed, damaged, improperly stored, incorrectly labelled, counterfeit, substandard, prohibited, or unauthorized. At the facility level, proper management includes maintaining an inventory book for unwholesome products,” it noted.
It urged the public to stay vigilant and report suspicious products or activities to the nearest NAFDAC office.
