The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has denied organizing any protest against the recent increase in petrol prices.
This denial follows the circulation of a statement allegedly from NANS, claiming that the association planned to shut down major cities across the country in protest of the petrol price hike, starting from September 15, 2024. The purported statement also called for a reversal of the petrol price and the removal of Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL).
However, NANS Senate President, Afeez Akinteye, labeled the statement as false and urged security agencies to investigate its source.
“We strongly advise the public, media, and all stakeholders to ignore these fabricated reports. The individuals behind this are using the NANS name maliciously to further their own agenda,” Akinteye said.
He stressed that the intention of those behind the rumors is to destabilize the nation and stir unnecessary tension. He reaffirmed that NANS has no association with any such plans.
Akinteye called for a thorough investigation, insisting that those responsible for the misinformation must be identified and held accountable.
“The misuse of the NANS name to spread such dangerous falsehoods poses a threat to national security and undermines the genuine efforts of millions of students who seek change through lawful means,” he added.
Akinteye also urged security agencies to act swiftly against anyone using NANS’ name to incite unrest, emphasizing the importance of protecting the integrity of the country’s democratic processes and the rule of law.
“NANS remains committed to advocating for the rights and welfare of Nigerian students through peaceful, lawful, and constructive methods. We stand for peace, progress, and national unity,” he concluded.
