The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) says it has begun an investigation into a controversial video in which musician Speed Darlington acknowledged to having had an illicit relationship with a 15-year-old girl.

When video of Darlington confessing to having sex with the juvenile appeared on social media on Tuesday, it caused a stir.

Authorities responded to the outcry, and the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) took action to resolve the matter.

The DSVA noted, however, that although the precise site of the incident is yet unknown, its authority is restricted to Lagos. Consequently, the agency forwarded the case to NAPTIP for additional examination.

In a short statement released on Wednesday via X, NAPTIP confirmed that its cybercrime response team was actively reviewing the viral video and other related content posted by Darlington.

“‘The NAPTIP Cybercrime Response Team has commenced investigations into the disturbing Instagram live video and other videos made by the same individual,” the statement reads.

“We at NAPTIP are committed to a world where children are safe and free from all forms of violence.”

Following the intense backlash, Darlington backtracked on his earlier confession, claiming it was entirely fictional.

Asserting his role as a content creator, he defended his right to craft provocative narratives for engagement.

The singer also refused to provide further clarification, insisting his statements were purely for entertainment purposes.
