The National Assembly has launched an investigation into the alleged brutal execution of members of a vigilante group by Nigerian Army personnel in Eke, Udi Local Government.
According to some sources, personnel from the Nigerian Army’s 82 Division opened fire on members of the Eke Vigilante Group who were on their way to react to a distress call in their town, killing two of them, including a woman, and injuring three others.
The House of Representatives ad-hoc committee led by its chairman, Sanni Abdulraheem, who met with the Enugu State Deputy Governor Ifeanyi Ossai on Wednesday, assured him of their resolve to uncover the truth and serve justice.
They are in the state on a fact-finding mission to unravel the truth behind the unfortunate incident and bring the perpetrators to book.
Their meeting with the deputy governor of the state is clear and that is to commiserate with the government and to share the scope of the assignment with him.
The deputy told the delegate about the government’s vested interest in the case and why the job must be done with every sense of responsibility.
He also wants the parliamentarian to make some budgetary provision for the state on security because of its peculiarity in the region.
After the meeting, the team moved to the state assembly for a public hearing to take into account various sides to the story.
The speaker, Enugu State House of Assembly, who received the delegation, said nothing will be more rewarding than bringing the perpetrators to book.
They also made a brief stop at the hospital where victims of the gunshot were receiving treatment, a move that was reassuring for the victims and their families.
As residents await the outcome of the investigation, they will want to see the end of such assaults from officers whose primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and security of Nigerians.
