A heated exchange erupted in the National Assembly on Thursday during the 2025 budget defence session as the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, presented the Nigeria Police budget.

Tensions flared when two lawmakers questioned discrepancies between the IGP’s presentation and prior documents.

The committee chair’s effort to proceed while addressing the concerns was met with resistance, culminating in a shouting match and a senator staging a walkout.

Order was restored, allowing the IGP to resume, where he reiterated his call to remove the NPF from the restrictive envelope budget system, arguing it impedes addressing national security challenges effectively.

Senator Abdul Ningi contended that the envelope system lacked legal standing and should remain a guideline. Meanwhile, other lawmakers suggested reforming police funding to adopt a more flexible, needs-based approach.
