The president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has disclosed that President Bola Tinubu assured organised labour that he is taking “extra steps” to address the worsening insecurity across the country.

The assurance followed a meeting between labour leaders and the president at the State House on Tuesday, held as a last-minute attempt to halt the nationwide protest announced by the congress over growing insecurity.

Ajaero spoke in the early hours of Wednesday after a follow-up engagement with a federal government delegation led by Hope Uzodinma, Imo state governor and chairman of the Progressives Governors’ Forum.

Other members of the delegation included Nasiru Idris of Kebbi, Monday Okpebholo of Edo, Usman Ododo of Kogi, as well as Nkiru Onyejeocha, minister of state for labour and employment.

According to Ajaero, labour leaders will brief members of the congress on the outcomes of their discussions with both the president and the government team.

He quoted President Tinubu as saying that insecurity would soon be brought under control, adding that another meeting has been fixed for January 2026 to address unresolved issues.

“We will take whatever we discussed with them to our members,” Ajaero said.

“Mr President was emphatic that the issue of insecurity will be a thing of the past very soon and that he is taking extra steps to take care of it.

“We equally talked about financial insecurity. A worker who is not well fed and well paid will have more problems.

“The president said he has put Nigeria on the path of prosperity. We agreed that we will meet in January to look at some grey areas we need to touch, which will equally translate to the prosperity of the working class.”

Despite the series of engagements, members of the labour union staged protests in Lagos and Abuja over the rising insecurity in several parts of the country.
